The bustling town of Kota is situated on the banks of the river Chambal. This historic city is renowned for its invincible forts, museums, palaces, temples and sprawling gardens. The rich history of Kota dates back to the 12th century when it was once the part of the erstwhile Rajput kingdom of Bundi. Kota became an independent princely state in 1624, when the Mughal emperor Jehangir defeated its rulers. The historical monuments, vibrant markets, sumptuous cuisine and life style of Kota reflect the splendor of the bygone era.

Kota today is famous for its Hydro Electric Plant on the Chambal River and the stunningly beautiful Kota Doria saris that are woven in the nearby called Kaithoon. Kota is also for its IIT JEE preparation, and is home to Asia's biggest manufacturer of fertilizers.

Places of Interest

City Fort and Palace
Overlooking the Kota barrage and the Chambal River, City fort and Palace is the prime attraction of Kota. Built in 17th century, it is one of the largest fort complexes in Rajasthan. The fort has rugged bastion and ramparts adorned with delicate domes and balustrades and an impressive gateway.

Government Museum
Situated in Brijvilas Palace, The Government Museum houses an incredible collection of rare coins, manuscripts and representative selection of Hadoti sculpture. It remains open from 10AM to 5 PM. One of the most precious collectible is the 9th century sculptured statue brought here from Baroli

Chambal Garden
The picturesque Chambal gardens are situated on the banks of the Chambal River. The gardens have a foggy pond that serves as a vital habitat for crocodiles and alligators. These gardens are the major picnic spot of Kota.

Rao Madho Singh Museum
Counted as one of the finest museums of Rajasthan, Rao Madho Singh Museum displays a wonderful collection of miniature paintings, magnificent sculptures, frescoes, ancient murals, arma and many valuable antiquities. It also houses the artistic items once used by the former rulers of Kota. The museum remains open (except Friday) from 11AM to 5 PM.

Haveli of Devaji
Known for its amazing frescos and miniature paintings, The grand havelis of Devtjai is one of the most beautiful mansions in Rajasthan. Prior permission is required to visit the Haveli.

Kansu Temple
Devoted to lord Shiva, the temple houses a rare four-faced Shivlingam. It is one the prime pilgrim destinations for Shaivaites.

Kota Barrage
Kota Barrage is a part of the irrigation canal system set on the Chambal River. This idyllic site is perfect for an evening promenade.

Jagmandir Palace
The magnificent Jag Mandir Palace was built by one of the queens of Kota in 1740. It is set midst the beautiful Kishor Sagar Lake. The rippling waters of the lake offers a breathtaking reflection of the Palace.

By Road: An extensive network of roads connect Kota to all important cities like Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bundi
